The Zapata Hawks fell 55-22 in their season opener against Weslaco East in Weslaco on Friday night.
The Hawks were dominated by East’s ground game, which accounted for all six touchdowns and 435 yards.
The Hawks trailed just 28-16 at halftime.
“We had our chances,” Hawks coach Mario Arce told RGVsports.com. “We could have put up 40 points but we missed some opportunities. We played hard and hopefully our performance carries over in our district play.”
Andrew Magee was a Zapata highlight with 218 yards on 24 carries, including a 3-yard touchdown.
Zapata’s next game is Sept. 3 at Roma at 7:30 p.m. The Gladiators defeated Laredo Martin 28-7 on Friday night.
